Straight to The Top-an Interview with Boost Mobile President, Matt Carter!
By Jennifer Faith Stiefel

My quest for a new cell phone had gone from a fun, ”I can’t wait to shop for a new phone” vibe to a lingering “one more thing I have to get done” (sigh) on my list type of thing. With the economy plunging I knew it was time to reevaluate my contract, my services, and who my provider was.

I threw the general question “What cell phone do you have, who is your carrier, and are you happy?” on to my Facebook® status to see who would respond. Immediately, comments poured in, but to my surprise, there was no one majority sticking out. It seemed my friends online were just as distraught over their choice in carriers as I was. Some had sampled the latest gadget on the market only to find an outrageous bill in the mail a month later while others had their old model phone but refused to incorporate their phones features over the fear of not knowing what they would be charged. Roaming, data usages, sending pictures, accessing multimedia... wow...it adds up quick. And then the horror stories poured in with parents whose children had not texted just a few times a day as their parents had thought, but hundreds of time each and every day, causing insurmountable bills and stress.

I spent hour after hour online researching different companies. Each and every company had their plans set up differently, and all wanted additional money for any add-ons such as texting and surfing the web. I was so frustrated. Then, I found the one site that was simple, all inclusive, and affordable. But could I believe it? After talking with Matt Carter, Image the President of Boost Mobile (yes, I went straight to the top), I quickly learned that not only could I trust, but I could actually learn to fall in love with my new cell phone service provider-I’m already part of their family.

Matt Carter is a genuine guy. He grew up the oldest of five children. His parents, a cop and a factory worker, were not able to provide many luxuries, but they instilled in their children the belief they could accomplish anything with hard work. And Matt has done just that. He’s a graduate of both Northwestern and Harvard. And he and the company he runs are advocates for the consumer. Seriously. The contract from cell phone providers is always about the company, never about the consumer. There are always a ton of terms and conditions in fine print. And if you are late with a payment, your credit is notified and you can kiss your good score goodbye. And along came Matt.

“Boost Mobile is simple. There is no contract. It’s unlimited calling, text messaging, and internet usage for $50 bucks.” Matt states so simply. “There are no hidden fees here-it is what it is-A great deal. The other carriers are like big brother watching over you. They send you your bill each month and you never know what it will really be until you open it up. Pay it late, they attack your credit. We planned a democracy here.”

And many are flocking to that democracy and saving our hard earned cash while getting top of the line features. Just this past October, it was announced that Boost Mobile’s were continuing to rise. “There are no shenanigans. It’s simplicity here. We compete with the others by offering the complete total package.” Said Carter, pride in his company gleaming through his voice. “We are on a World Class, Ranked #3 Network, bringing you great service. There are no roaming charges, minutes to count, time and days to look out for. We give you total value and flexibility.”

With customer service locations throughout the country, an easy to use website that provides convenience to its members, and 24 hour phone tech support, its’ easy to get help when you need it. “There are other plans also,” Matt stresses, “that are also very simple.”

“The beginnings of prepaid plans have given them almost a bad reputation. Cell phone companies were turning people down over their credit. They had to figure out a way to get those customers, hence the introduction of a prepaid plan. Consumers looked down upon it, as a status symbol since it then represented someone with not the best credit.”

“At Boost Mobile it’s not about your credit. It’s about common sense and good customer relations. It’s about good finances. It’s about trust and honesty. We keep it simple, no hidden fees. The $50 plan is just that. $50 a month for unlimited talk, text, web, and walkie talkie. $50 means $50. Our other prepaid plans are great too if you don’t want to spend $50.”

I had to laugh to myself as my memory went back to the days of my father getting what was then called “the Bag Phone”. It was so huge and so heavy. It had one function and that was a telephone-if you could get service. It came in a large bag with a shoulder strap, so you could “easily carry what was more like a piece of luggage” from house to the car to the house. Wow-have times changed!

Boost Mobile’s device portfolio is impressive. You can view them and order right on their website, or you can go to one of their hundreds of locations to see the phones in person.
